Book One: Visual Music & Poetry – The How

Visual Music & Poetry brings together studio practice, art history, philosophy, criticism, and the science of perception into a new way of thinking about art. It is written for artists, students, and readers who want to understand not only what art is, but how and why it works — culturally, biologically, and historically.
The project is intentionally published outside institutional and commercial constraints, and is made accessible through a reader-supported model.
Book Two - Visual Music & Poetry - The Why

The second book continues the Visual Music & Poetry project by greatly expanding the central chapter on the science behind art.
It draws on contemporary neuroscience and evolutionary biology to explore how human perception, cognition, and evolved behavior shape our experience of painting.
The second volume is released gradually as the research and writing develop. Patrons receive early access to each installment as it is completed.

Summary of Visual Music & Poetry Book Project
Visual Music & Poetry—The How introduces a groundbreaking model that reveals the biological and neurological foundations of powerful visual art. Drawing from neuroscience, evolutionary biology, philosophy, and art criticism, this book offers a compelling new way to understand why certain paintings resonate so strongly—and how artists can use these insights to improve their own work. Whether you create oil paintings, explore contemporary art, or simply want to understand how to paint with greater emotional impact, this book provides a clear, transformative framework.
Through accessible explanations and vivid examples—from my own studio practice to the work of remarkable contemporary painters and masters throughout art history—you’ll discover core visual principles that have shaped great painting for millennia. These concepts illuminate not only what makes a painting successful, but how you can apply these principles to your own creative process, art studies, or art appreciation.
Rejecting the temporary “isms” and ideological trends that dominated the 20th century, the Visual Music & Poetry model and the Pluralist Philosophy of Art return to the universal truths of human visual experience. This philosophy embraces every style of painting—from photorealism to abstraction—and extends naturally into installation and digital art. Because it is grounded in human biology rather than cultural fashion, it transcends debates about taste, identity, and elitism, allowing art to be judged by one standard: its impact.
Ideal for painters seeking to deepen their technique, art lovers trying to understand what makes great art work, and cultural professionals navigating today’s complex contemporary art landscape, this book offers both clarity and practical insight. For artists, these principles provide a powerful roadmap for elevating your craft, strengthening your visual voice, and taking your paintings to a new level of expression, meaning, and emotional depth.
If you want to understand art more deeply—or learn how to paint with intention, clarity, and confidence—Visual Music & Poetry—The How will change the way you see, think about, and create art.

Bonjour Barry
