E. Charlton Fortune (1885 – 1969) was a famous American Impressionism artist. She was taught by William Merritt Chase and Arthur Frank Mathews, and she achieved international fame for her paintings.

She was a member of the Carmel Art Association, to which I also was elected a member in 1999.

She was born in 1885 in Sausolito, California to a Scottish Father and American Mother. Her family was wealthy so she travelled abroad a great deal during her life, including Scotland, England and France, as well as various places around the USA.

Throughout her painting career she achieved many accolades and memberships to prestigious painting groups:

You can read more information about her life and works on Wikipedia.

I have a particular affinity for her work because we both worked in the same Californian landscape for many years, but in different centuries. She has a great sense of composition, and was also adept at optical color mixing. Another strong feature of her work is her color harmony.
