What is included in the Process Building Block?

This course of painting lessons gives you detailed step-by-step process for how to create a painting. The first lesson in this series shows you how to paint in the alla prima or direct style, using oils, acrylics or watercolors. An alla prima painting is one that is created in one session.

Course Unit 1 - Plein Air Painting in Oils & Acrylics

To capture the essence of a landscape or outdoor still life where the light is constantly changing, you need to work quickly. In a short time you have to capture the important essence of the mood and feeling of light in your painting. This is the essence of plein air painting. To do this you need to use an ' alla prima' painting process. Alla prima means 'all in one sitting or session', so you can actually use this approach in the studio as well as outdoors.

In this course unit, you will learn:

  • the nine step alla prima process – a quick and efficient process for quickly capturing the light effects outdoors when the light is changing quickly
  • 30 tips to make your life easier when painting alla prima
  • 18 common problems that you are likely to run into when you are plein air painting and what to do about them

Course Unit 1 - Watercolor Step-By-Step

This course unit contains similar information to the oils & acrylic course unit, but focuses on information relevant to the watercolor painter. The process works equally well indoors or outdoors.

In this course unit, you will learn:

  • an eight-step process for painting watercolors, from planning to final painting
  • how to use glazes to make your painting luminous
  • a quick watercolor sketch technique to create a painting in 15 minutes

Course Unit 2 - Planning Your Learning Program

This course unit will help you plan your own “how to paint” learning program and is essential for all students who are serious about improving the quality of their work. It will help you get the most of the Virtual Art Academy painting courses. If you are currently frustrated by not making enough progress and really want to improve your painting, you need to get organized about how and when you learn.

It is important you organize yourself for learning and don't just randomly jump from one topic to another. Having a good plan is the best way to achieve your paining goals. It describes learning plans and paths for beginner, intermediate and expert painter.

In this course unit, you will learn:

  • how to set your own goals, and why you can make great strides forward in only a few years if you plan your learning properly

This course unit outlines the basic materials you need to know about before you can put paint to canvas or paper. This information is based on my personal experience of different brands and types of equipment.

Course Unit 5 - Working from Photographic Reference

Although I caution that working only from photographs and never from life, will severely limit you as an artist, working from photographs is an important tool for any artist. This is what I've learned so far about working from photographic reference material.

  • how to work from digital images and print images
  • how to view slides
  • how to organize your photographic reference so you can find them again
  • tips on buying photographic equipment for painting

Course Unit 6-1 - Plein Air Equipment

Inefficient working habits are a particular problem when you are working outdoors in conditions that are already difficult. They can waste unnecessary time and get in the way of your art. All successful professionals get themselves well organized when working outdoors. I've been painting outdoors for many years now and have learned an lot of lessons, often the hard way!. Here is everything I've learned about how to make the experience as pleasurable as possible and save you many frustrations I've gone through over the years.

I've also spent a ton of money on different pieces of equipment, some good, some bad and some so so. I think if you read this course unit before buying any equipment you could save hundreds of dollars, or if you are like me, a few thousand dollars! A friend of mine once said there wasn't a piece of art equipment that I didn't like! That's not quite true - I was only trying to perfect my system and looking for that perfect piece of equipment! honest!

Course Unit 6-2 - Lightweight Painting Supports

Traveling light is becoming increasingly important in these days of weight restrictions on airplanes, not to mention those of us with bad backs! Painting supports (the surfaces you paint on) are a big part of your weight. This course unit will explain all the options you have for lightweight and compact painting supports and the pros and cons of each. I also give you tips for saving money on your painting supports and how to make your own.

This course unit is for oil and acrylic painters.

In this course unit, you will learn:

  • the difference between linen and cotton canvas and when to use them
  • fiberboard and plywoods and when to use them
  • paper-based product and how to use them
  • the mounting-board system for lightening your load when traveling by air
  • gatorboard and museum board: two of the ultra light options
  • how to mount painting supports to a mounting board when you get home after traveling
  • the difference between low, medium, and high-density fiberboard and which you should use (ldf, mdf, hdf)
  • what painting supports to use and what to avoid if you plan to sell your work in galleries
  • materials you can use to paint on to save money
