Rhythm

The flow of shapes and lines throughout a painting that holds the painting together and that can give it unity. This flow usually has a periodic or symmetrical movement. It is analogous to the rhythmical beats in music and similarly can range from a very simple rhythm (such as a two beat bar in music) to more complex rhythms.

In this painting there are two rhythms. The first is formed by the series of repeating dark thin vertical shapes formed by the prows of the gondolas and the poles. The second rhythm is the horizontal row of domes and towers silhouetted against the sky. Making the analogy with music, we have two instruments, each playing a different part in step with one another.
