Local color
The color many people think is intrinsic to an object, as in a blue sea or sky, green grass, or yellow hay. With man-made objects, this would be the color the object was painted with when made. In actuality, the local color is modified by the color of the light and the surrounding atmosphere and so is never perceived by the eye. The human brain (unless trained as an artist) symbolically changes the perceived color to the "local color". This is a common problem with beginning painters.
