A thin transparent layer of paint applied over a dry, lighter colored layer, to produce a more luminous effect. Light passes through the transparent layer and is reflected off the light surface, back through the glaze, thus increasing the amount of light entering the viewer’s eye compared to opaque paint.
Glazing is a technique you use to give your painting carrying power – the ability for people to see vibrant color from a distance. This is because a color that is created by a series of glazes lets more light reach the viewer’s eye than a color created by mixing the pigments on the paper. Therefor it appears more intense to the viewer.
