Virtual Art Academy® Drawing Lessons
What is included in the Drawing Building Block?
There are a lot of different techniques for learning drawing – gesture, contour, envelopes, scribble line, mass, and so on. But with all these techniques to choose from, where do you start to learn how to draw? how do you decide which technique to choose? In these drawing course units you will learn all the individual techniques, then I explain how to put it all together to take away the confusion and help you learn how to draw better. |
|
Although I've taken a lot of drawing classes in my career over the years, I did not find out about some of the most valuable techniques until much later on - if I had known about some of these techniques earlier it would have saved me a lot of frustration! So I've included all these for you in these course units. |

The Drawing Building Block consists of six course units (in pdf format) and a total of 126 pages: |

Course Unit 1 - Gesture
To improve your drawing skills you should always be sketching. I recommend you keep a sketchbook with you as much as possible and draw whenever you get the chance. It does not really matter what you draw, any subject will give you valuable practice. There are several techniques for quickly capturing something in front of you. These are generally called gesture sketches. It is important you choose the right approach. The key factor in choosing the right approach is how much time do you have? |
|
| If you only have 30 seconds before the person you are sketching is about to move, then you need to use a technique that captures the essence of the scene in 30 seconds. If you have 5 minutes, then a different technique might give you better results. This course unit will help you choose. Again, I only learned some of these techniques later on in my career. |

Course Unit 2 - Accuracy
Most students have trouble getting their drawings to look real. This is simply because some of the proportions are not accurate. Luckily there are several techniques you can use to check and fix the accuracy of your drawings. You can use techniques such as levels and plumb lines to check for errors in alignment, and there are many other techniques you can use that I talk about in this course unit. If you do not get your drawing accurate, no amount of color or detail will make the painting look good. |
|
The good news is that these techniques are fairly simple once you know how to do them. I learned many of these techniques from Burt Dodson's great book on drawing, but by far the most useful technique I know I learned from a young man fresh out of art school. He just happened to be drawing next to me during a life drawing session, and I was curious why his drawings looked so good, so he showed me how! It just goes to show that it is never too late to learn, no matter how experienced you are! |

Course Unit 3 - Contour
Did you know that problems in drawing are caused by knowing too much rather than knowing too little? The big secret to drawing well is to return your brain to the state it was in when you were a child and before your brain started to symbolize what it sees and ignore the actual shapes that are in front of it. A face instead of being a skull shape with various small forms superimposed on it becomes symbolized as a circle with two smaller circles for eyes, a triangle for a nose and a curved line for the mouth. |
|
You no longer actually see what is really there. I picked up many of these ideas from Betty Edward's excellent book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". If you combine this approach with the other techniques described in the other course units in this Building Block, your drawing will show a lot of improvement. |

Course Unit 4 - Putting It All Together
In previous units I cover all the individual techniques you need to know to draw well. In this course unit you will learn how to put together all these separate techniques in order to create an accurate drawing. This integration of techniques is the most difficult part, and is rarely talked about in books on drawing. In this unit I will explain actually what goes on inside the mind of an expert artist when he or she is actually drawing. This is something that many artists find difficult, if not impossible, to explain to you, but you need to know about if you want to draw like they do. |

Course Unit 5 - Basic Perspective
If you want to paint landscapes, and in particular townscapes or anything with buildings in it, you need to have a basic knowledge of perspective. Some books make this topic too complicated so I've tried to keep it simple and focus on the main techniques you need to know about to make your buildings look right. In fact there is one technique I describe here which will give you 99% of the benefits of perspective without even knowing a thing about perspective rules. This can really make your life simple! |
|
In this unit you will learn as much about perspective as you need for the majority of your paintings. These are the rough and ready practical techniques you can use out in the field or in the studio. You will learn a simple and practical approach to linear perspective, and the essentials of drawing ellipses — a critical skill for all painters that distinguishes the amateur from the professional. You will learn the techniques of: |

Course Unit 6 - Advanced Perspective
Not every painting can be solved by the use of basic perspective rules. For example, if you are painting in a hill town in Tuscany with sloping streets, you soon learn that you need to understand a bit more about perspective! (That's when I first realized I didn't understand as much of the science of perspective as I thought I did!). And if you like to draw or paint interesting buildings that have arches, then again you'll need more than just the basic rules of perspective. |
|
Perspective actually can get quite complex and most of today's books on perspective treat the subject in quite a shallow way. Did you know that JMW Turner (1775-1851) was actually a professor of perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts? That gives you an idea of how much there is to learn about this topic. My source for these techniques was a great book on perspective that was written in the last century that has everything you ever wanted to know on perspective. The only problem is that the book is very difficult to read and has a lot of information that from a practical point of view I don't think most artists need - it took me a couple of months or so to figure it out. For this reason I don't really recommend the book to students so I've extracted the most important techniques and simplified the explanations using the Information Mapping approach I've used in all these course units. |

What does it cost?
This course is equivalent to a two week specialist course of study with a professional artist that would cost around $3,000 including travel and lodging.
Many of my students have told me that this is the most thorough information they have found anywhere on the internet (read the emails that students have sent me over the past few years) so I will happily give you a 30-day Money Back Guarantee.
