Richard Diebenkorn (1922 – 1993) was a well-known 20th century American painter who worked in California. His early work is associated with Abstract expressionism and the of the 1950s and 1960s. He became famous for his later work (best known as the Ocean Park paintings) which are entirely abstract works consisting of purely geometrical shapes. However I don't think this later work was as good as his earlier, mid-period work because it completely lacks poetry. His mid-period work was representational, and based on the landscape in an abstract form. It was also very large size which gave the work a strong impact. The thing I like about Diebenkorn's work in particular is its far music, which carries a great impact because of the large size of the work. Although abstracted, the illusion of the landscape is convincing, and his color relationships accurately convey the atmospheric perspective in the landscape. Another characteristic of his work is a very interesting space division.
