John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) was an American painter, and a leading portrait painter of his time. During his career, he created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as many sketches and charcoal drawings. He travelled a lot to paint making trips to Venice, the Tyrol in Switzerland, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. Venice is one of my favorite places to paint, and I found living and working there for a time gave me a special appreciation of Sargent's work. I especially like his paintings because of his beautiful compositions with very strong notan structures, perfect values and modeling (his use of edges is one of his particular strengths, and is well worthwhile studying closely). He used a fairly limited palette compared to some of my other favourite painters such as Sorolla, and so is not a painter to study from the color point of view. The best site to see more of his work is http://jssgallery.org/
